"SUPER" Supermoon November 2016!

Well, it was an exciting week for photographers!  I'm sure you've all heard about November 14th's Supermoon?  It was the last time we will see a full moon this big for another 70 years apparently.  I was thrilled to find that the weather was good both the night before and the night of the Supermoon.  The first night, I went to Spring Point Ledge Light, and the moon looked big and beautiful, but nothing like the night of the full moon:

The night of the full moon was a huge difference.  But it was a much more challenging shoot.  It was full dark, being over 30 minutes after sunset, so I had to juggle with settings to be able to expose for both the moon and the lighthouse.  At first, it worked well:

It was unbelievably large and beautiful!  There were tons of other people on Long Sands Beach with me, all along the beach--I am not sure how many, but possibly as much as 100?  It was such great energy.

Once the moon rose a bit more, however, the shoot became even trickier, possibly because the moon was so darned bright.  So I began taking one picture to expose for the lighthouse and island and one picture to expose for the moon, so it wouldn't just look like a big white disk hanging in the sky.

In Photoshop, I superimposed the two shots together and erased the white moon and let the moon from my "moon picture" shine through.  I think it looks pretty good!

I hope you all got to see this amazing vision for yourselves.  I'm so glad I drove all the way to York, Maine (an hour) to share this experience with so many other nice people.

Final Shots from my Autumnal Revels

I am sorry to see the last of these Autumnal shots.  Why can't Autumn give us beauty and color for the whole three months, like the other three seasons do?  (Well, maybe not Winter. . .)

Fuller Farm Sunset and Stars, Scarborough, Maine

I went to Pine Point yesterday in Scarborough, ME, looking for some nifty sunset shots of the dories and rowboats at high tide.  But, hey--no boats here!  The water was REALLY choppy and the boats were really close to the shore and looked pretty lame.  So I changed my plan and thought I would try to get some salt marsh at sunset shots. . .  Hmm. .. .  No salt marsh in evidence here either.  What gives, Cindy?  Well, the upshot is that I took a wrong left turn at Albuquerque, so to speak, and ended up at Fuller Farm in Scarborough and I'm so glad I did!  The haystacks looked so beautiful and harvesty, and there were magnificent pink clouds overhead.  And then I stayed long enough to capture some stars, as you'll see in my third shot.  Sometimes, when life hands you lemons. . .

Shaken, NOT Stirred. . .

Shaken, NOT Stirred. . . .
I had a lot of messy fun taking this shot yesterday.  After many unsatisfying splashes in which those tiny green orbs just plunked in and barely made a wave, I realized that I could POUR the liquid into the glass and have it cascade all around in a very exciting way, much like I have done with wine pours.

HOWEVER. . . .

When I put the olives into the glass first and then poured, inevitably, thanks to the physics of the glass shape, the water ejected the olives out the right side of the glass and OUT of my composition, leaving me with some great pours, but NO olives in sight, or olives flying hastily out of the frame along with lots of water.  NOT what I was looking for obviously!

So, then I hit on the idea of using one of the underwhelming shots where the olives showed through the water nicely, but had made a really pathetic splash.  I put the best splash shot together with the best olive shot and erased the olives into the splash shot and voila:

A Martini, shaken, NOT stirred!

Spring Flowers: What's not to love?

Tulips in my garden yesterday. . .
Alone in the garden. . .
Sherwood Gardens, Baltimore, MD on a sunny afternoon.
Cherry Blossom Festival, Portland, Maine!
Another lone tulip. . .
Tulips with a background of the deep blue sky. . .
Beautiful Cinquefoil I discovered on a walk in the woods in Maryland recently. . .
Sherwood Gardens, Baltimore, MD--Magnolia, Magnolia, Magnolia!
What Mainer doesn't long for the sight of Spring flowers throughout the long, long winters?  I know I always do, and as a result, once the Spring flowers start showing their beautiful heads, I take advantage of it, beginning with crocuses and snowdrops, cherry blossoms, tulips, magnolias and continuing all the way to the last hardy New England Asters and Cosmos in the Fall.  Nothing is quite so pretty as Spring flowers though.

Over the last couple of weeks, since we visited my in-laws in Baltimore, MD, I have had quite a few opportunities to photograph flowers, starting with Baltimore's beautiful Sherwood Gardens which is filled with magnolia trees, beds full of multi-colored tulips, daffodils, flowering crab apples and cherry trees.  It was a gorgeous, sunny day and I had a great time wandering all over the gardens, taking shots.

And just in my neighborhood, up the street, are two brilliantly pink cherry trees that are simply laden with blossoms (image 4) and scads of pink tulips blooming right in my garden.

I was very happy to discover that in all the construction work on the Capisic Pond area last summer, the Lupine field that had just started to bloom well last summer had been left intact!  There are loads of Lupine plants growing, so be prepared for some more flower posts in June (or maybe even before!)
This shot was taken at the Capisic Pond Estuary last year during "Lupine Time."
You can always see more of my flower images on my website of course.
Happy Spring everyone!
