This was from last week's shoot at PHL. I neglected to post a vertical shot and this one was definitely a nice view of the sunrise and the ligthouse at dawn.

This was also taken with my new Pentax K3 body.

Sailors Take Warning

Sailors Take Warning, originally uploaded by Cindy Farr-Weinfeld.

So, I headed out to Portland Head Light well before dawn a couple of days ago after a week of 43-45 degree temperatures. I saw that the temperature was supposed to plunge down to near zero or even below and I thought, "There WILL be sea mist on the water tomorrow morning!" Well, there wasn't. . . It was a very pretty sunrise, but it looks quite similar to the one I took last week and posted here. It doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy myself, or enjoy meeting the three nice photographers who also braved the frigid cold. In fact, it was quite lovely to be out there. I had had a headache the day before that I just couldn't get rid of, try as I might with relaxation and Advil. . . It plagued me all night long and as I drove out to the lighthouse. But I noticed about a minute after settling in to the place I was standing to take pictures: "My headache is gone!" Who wouldn't feel relaxed and at peace, looking at such a wonderful view?

I took this with my brand new Pentax K3 camera and my Pentax 12-24mm lens. I'm thinking there is more noise associated with the K3 than there was with my K5, but the files are HUGE and filled with detail, so having to denoise after the fact is okay so far.

Spring Point Ledge Light at Twilight 2014

Yesterday, I went to South Portland's sweet little Spring Point Ledge Light for sunset, but found that the best light was after the moment of sunset. I brought my new Pentax k3 and was very excited to try it out. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that you have to have a card in each of its two slots, or you apparently only take in jpeg! So this was a jpeg, which I do not prefer, as I like to have all the information to work on after the fact in Camera Raw and Photoshop, if necessary. I can do much better post-processing color adjustments with RAW files, which I would have done to this image--it is a bit too purply-blue for my taste, but it will do. . .

Willard Beach Shacks at Dawn, January 2014

I stopped at Willard Beach first thing on my sunrise quest this morning. It was around 6:30 and the colors were just beginning to develop. It was quite peaceful and tranquil there, with only one woman out walking her dog in the near-dark. This was about a 10 second exposure.

Portland Head Light January 2014 Sunrise

New shot from dawn at Portland Head Light this morning! The cold snap is over, sadly, and I missed all the sea mist of the negative zero temperatures of the week past. But I'm quite happy with the beautiful light and clouds I saw this morning.

Squirreling Away

East End Dock Pilings at Dawn

This is a croporama (one image, cropped in vertically to create a panoramic effect) of the old dock pilings just off the boat launch at Portland's East End Beach. Taken moments before the sun rose above the clouds on the horizon on New Year's Day 2014.

East End Bandstand on New Year's Day 2014

My husband and I got out of bed at 6 am after staying up until after midnight for the New year's celebration and we headed over to Portland's Eastern Promenade to see the sunrise. The bandstand or band shell in the little park looked so cozy and pretty, faintly silhouetted and wrapped in the colors of Civil Twilight. (It was NOT a cozy temperature, despite how warm it looks--it was below zero!) Happy New Year all!
