Thinking about an autumnal photo shoot. . .

So, I've been working out where to go in Western Maine THIS October, after having so much success last year heading up toward Bethel, ME. At first, I thought, "I need to go to Baxter State Park!" But after a lot of research, I realized that. . . I need to do MORE research! So I'll plan a trip for next summer to Baxter with my family instead.

But I think I may head to Weld, ME for a couple of days, because there are so many amazingly beautiful sights just off the road: wooded streams and rivers, Webb Lake, Mt. Blue State Park, Tumbledown Mountain and the "bowl" at the top--a beautiful pond.

Sunset at Willard Beach

Over the past couple of weeks, I drove over to South Portland's Willard Beach's sweet little shacks several times, hoping to get great sunset light. The first two times, despite the clouds being gorgeous in Portland, as I drove over, it completely clouded up and rained! But the third time, THIS night, I was rewarded with some really magical light. I'm so glad, because I love these little fishing shacks.

Reviving Ye Olde Blog!

Hi everyone! It has been SUCH a long time since I last posted: 2014! But I thought I should dust off the old blog and start posting here again. I wanted to show some of my newest work to you. I went to Bug Light Park in South Portland the other night, hoping to capture the lighthouse at sunset, but the best light was over the Portland skyline itself.

There were at least 20 people around me, enjoying the weather and light, and they all whipped out their smart phones and cameras to capture what we were seeing.

The light over the lighthouse, which frequently can be beautiful at sunset, looking back toward Portland, was lackluster at best, although there were still people doggedly trying to get good pictures of it.

This was taken before the sunset (obviously!) and I shot it at f/32 with my 16-85mm lens, which introduced some softness, which I didn't like. But I did like all the points of the star it created of the sun! A photographic tradeoff I guess.

On the way back from my shoot at Five Islands in Georgetown, I managed to get a shot I've always wanted: the little suspension footbridge in Brunswick over the river. I just found out that it is called the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge. I had noticed a lot of sea mist or smoke on various smaller bodies of water as I drove home from Georgetown, and as I came closer to the footbridge, I saw that the river was covered in beautiful mist as high as twenty and thirty feet! I parked and ran across the bridge to face back into the sun so the mist would be backlit. It was gorgeous! The mist was undulating and wafting along slowly to the left of where I was standing. Hoarfrost about 1/2 inches thick decorated all of the trees and every surface on the bridge--gorgeous! I wouldn't have been surprised if little fairies started dancing around my head, honestly! This morning I headed out of the house at the ungodly hour of 4:30 am to drive up to Georgetown, Maine to photograph the Five Islands area on the coast. It was pitch black as I drove up and there really wasn't much light until I arrived there, and then I had about 40 minutes to photograph a beautiful clear twilight with warm colors in the sky. The water was so peaceful and calm, you would have sworn it was a lake or a pond. It was really chilly, at about 5 degrees, but fortunately there wasn't a breath of wind to disturb the water or me. I met a couple of nice women photographers there too, and by the end of the shoot, I was just about slurring with the cold!
